Narrative tenses - Simple story - A lucky escape

Intermediate B1-B2
20-30 minutes
Groups of 2-3

Worksheet description

Story ordering and gap fill exercises for a simple story using narrative tenses:
past simple, past continuous and past perfect (including some passives).

The exercise can be used either to revise or introduce the past perfect.

The cards can be used to highlight the difference between the true chronological order of events and the order in which events are mentioned when using the past perfect tense.

Instructions

Cut up the cards showing the events of the story or give out the first sheet as is and ask students to decide on a possible order.

Then either give the students the gap fill to complete (for revision of past perfect), or give out the complete story and get them to compare the chronological order of events they have agreed with the order in which events are mentioned in the story. They should note the verb forms used. (Introduction of past perfect.) They could then do the gap-fill as a follow-up exercise.
