Reference and substitution - grammar cards

Worksheet description

Eighteen cards with sentences containing unnecessary repetition. Students improve the sentences using language for reference and substitution: this, that, the one(s), neither / so, if so, if not etc.

Instructions

Cut up the cards as indicated and place them face down in the centre of the group.

If the activity is to be done competitively, a snakes and ladders board with question squares can be used. Otherwise it can be done as a simple group grammar activity.

Students take it in turns to take a card and fold it in half. At the top is the sentence to be examined; at the bottom is the answer. The student shows the card to the other student(s), who must complete the grammar task.

They then check the answer on the bottom of the card.

The teacher should monitor, offering help. At the end of the activity, ask students to choose the most difficult cards. Collect these in and show on the projector and give an explanation.
