Passive voice transformation exercise

Intermediate B1-B2
20-30 min
Groups of 3-4

Worksheet description

Twenty-four cards with active sentences to transform to the passive voice. These also illustrate some main reasons for using the passive: obvious / unknown / unimportant agent; personal vs impersonal tone etc.

Instructions

Cut up the cards and place them face down in the centre of the group.
If the activity is to be done competitively, a snakes and ladders board with question squares can be used. Otherwise it can be done as a simple grammar activity.
Students take it in turns to take a card and fold it in half. At the top is the sentence to be examined; at the bottom is the answer.
The student shows the card to the other student(s), who must complete the grammar task (multiple choice/ gap fill/ correction).
They then check the answer on the bottom of the card.
The teacher should monitor, offering help.
At the end of the activity, ask students to choose the most difficult cards.
Collect these in and show on the projector, giving an explanation.
